"81192, Please Return"
Written originally for this site, based on public historical records.
Few strings of numbers on the Chinese internet are bound as tightly to one person, one date and one feeling as 81192 is. Every April 1, countless people write the same sentence: "81192, please return."
Its power lies in its restraint. There is no accusation in it, and no oath — only the plainest possible call, as if spoken to a comrade who has not yet come home. That is precisely why it has lasted more than twenty years: it folds a grand narrative down into one person's concern for another.
For those who did not live through 2001, 81192 is a number that needs explaining; for those who remember, it needs none. That is the point of commemoration: it does not depend on time, but on whether someone is still willing to speak it.
This site exists so that the sentence has somewhere to land — a counter updated each day, an excerpt rotated each day, so that remembering requires no extra effort from anyone.
